IO/AU support class

Kooringal Public School has a K-6 Support Class that caters to eligible students with a diagnosis of Autism or Moderate Intellectual Disability, forming the IO/AU Support Class. This unit is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment that meets the diverse needs of its students within a mainstream setting.

The classroom consists of a Classroom Teacher and one School Learning Support Officer (SLSO). The Support Class is supervised by the Assistant Principal for Inclusion and Support, as well as the School Principal.

Integration

Inclusivity is central to all school activities and practices.

  • Opportunities for integration are provided across curriculum areas like library, sports, excursions, and assemblies.
  • The school is committed to offering the same educational opportunities as mainstream settings.

Playground

All Support Unit students can play in the KPS playground with mainstream peers to encourage friendships.

  • Inclusive play helps develop social skills, communication, and a sense of belonging.
  • The IO/AU Support Unit has a safe outdoor sensory area for self-regulation and quiet time.
  • Sensory area includes tactile paths, quiet corners, and calming sensory tools.
  • Shared play areas and sensory spaces create a supportive environment for all students.
  • Playtime helps build resilience, confidence, and positive interactions.

Outside Agencies

Kooringal Public School works closely with outside agencies to support students’ diverse needs.

  • Students in the IO/AU Support Unit receive extra help beyond the classroom.
  • Specialists include speech therapists, occupational therapists, behaviour support, and other health professionals.
  • These partnerships help create complete educational and development programs.
  • Collaboration improves learning, supports growth, and meets individual student goals.
  • The aim is to foster an inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
