IO/AU Support Unit

Kooringal Public School has a K-6 Support Class that caters to eligible students with a diagnosis of Autism or Moderate Intellectual Disability, forming the IO/AU Support Unit. This unit is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment that meets the diverse needs of its students within a mainstream setting.

The classroom consists of a Classroom Teacher and one School Learning Support Officer. The Support Unit is supervised by the Assistant Principal for Inclusion and Support, as well as the School Principal.

Integration Program

Inclusivity underpins all school practices, with appropriate opportunities for integration across most curriculum areas, including the library, sports, excursions, and assemblies. KPS is deeply committed to offering all students the same educational opportunities as those available to students in mainstream settings, promoting a sense of belonging and equal participation. Each student’s individual integration program is tailored to reflect their specific goals, interests, and abilities.

In addition, students have the opportunity to access a variety of extracurricular and enrichment activities, such as participation in the SRC (Student Representative Council), PSSA sports competitions, dance groups, choir, and other well-being programs. This helps students develop leadership skills, teamwork, and confidence while fostering social connections. Students in the Support Unit are encouraged to participate in school events, performances, and collaborative projects, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and engage with their peers in a supportive environment.

The school’s inclusive approach promotes mutual understanding, empathy, and friendships. Teachers and support staff work closely to facilitate these integration opportunities, ensuring that all students feel valued, cared for, and respected. This strengthens their social, emotional, and personal development, preparing them for a future where they can thrive in diverse community settings.

Playground

All students in the Support Unit have full access to the KPS playground alongside their mainstream peers, fostering social interactions and allowing students to build rapport and friendships with a diverse range of classmates. This inclusive play environment helps develop social skills, communication, and a sense of belonging among all students. Additionally, the IO/AU Support Unit boasts a safe and engaging outdoor sensory area that students can utilise during class time for self-regulation or during playtime when they need a quiet and secure retreat. This space includes sensory-friendly equipment and activities, such as tactile paths, quiet corners, and calming sensory tools, to support students’ emotional and sensory needs. The combination of shared play areas and designated sensory spaces ensures that all students can enjoy play that meets their individual preferences and helps build resilience, confidence, and positive interactions.

Outside Agencies

Kooringal Public School values collaboration with outside agencies to support the diverse needs of our students. These partnerships ensure that students in the IO/AU Support Unit receive comprehensive support that extends beyond the classroom. By working alongside specialists such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, behaviour support professionals, and other allied health providers, the school is able to create well-rounded educational and developmental programs. This collaboration enhances the learning experience, promotes growth, and addresses individual goals, ultimately fostering an inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
